Movie 9/Book 8

More updates to my 50/50 challenge!

Book 8:
The 5th Horseman (Women's Murder Club, #5)The 5th Horseman by James Patterson
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Hmm... Like the rest of this series, it's a quick easy read.  There are a few good plot twists, but they are somewhat predictable.  Still, when you need something mindless to read a few chapters of before bed this series is perfect.

Movie 9:

The Lorax

I always loved the book and original movie.  I was prepared to be disappointed in the remake... but it wasn't bad.  Cute and a good continuation of the story.  Still won't replace the original in my heart...

More Puffs!

I've been on a puff kick the past week or two.  Just in the mood for mindless knitting I guess.  Here's 14 more.  That should bring my total up to around 85 I think.  Progress... but still such a long way to go.

Book Six

Book Six of my 50/50 challenge:

The Dog StarsThe Dog Stars by Peter Heller
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I really didn't know much about this book when I checked it out from the library website, but had heard it was quite popular.  It is set in a post-apocalyptic world where most of the population has succumbed to a new strand of the flu.  It follows the life of a pilot, and his co-pilot dog, as well as their somewhat sociopathic friend/fellow survivor.  It was a compelling enough story that, even though it will not become one of my favorite, held my interest.  Definitely worth reading.

Veronica Mars Movie

Watch.  It's funny.

Not sure why I haven't written about this sooner, as I'm super excited about it!

It looks like there is a real chance we will finally see a Veronica Mars movie.  The cast is in, Rob Thomas is in, and they already raised the funds on Kickstarter.  Hopefully that means filming will be happening this summer.  Fingers crossed.

Need a Laugh?

Tonight was not my night... Not at all.  At least these made me laugh today.

They treats us like an extra and that feels so rough...

Warning! Season 1/Book One spoilers.

Ahh true love...

Oh Kevin...

Listening to SModcast Episode 29: Harry Scotter and the Order of the Penis
(which is Kevin Smith & Scott Mosier's Podcast)

Oh Kevin, how can you not like the movie Clue?  Such a classic...  Not only did he dislike it, he REALLY hated it!

"One plus two plus two plus one..."

A Few More Puffs

I haven't made any hexipuffs in quite some time.  Mostly because I was working on my sweater and then some Christmas knitting and then the sweater again.  Here are a few more finished ones.

I think that brings my total up to 71.  I should count them at some point though, as I'm not positive if that number is accurate or not.  There a good project to keep in my bag for on the go knitting, I just have to remember to throw them in my purse (although it is kind of annoying to have to carry around polyfill).

I also cast on and knit the cuff of my second Newton.  Need to finish before the next yarn shipment goes out!

Admission...

I am ashamed to admit it, but the season finale of Girls made me cry...  Of course, that is not hard to do.  I'm kind of baby and cry at movies/television/books extremely easily.

Season 2, Episode 10 - Together
Apparently Lena Dunham and Judd Apatow wrote this episode together (thus the title).  Many (including Televison without Pity) disliked it, but I did not.  TWoP had feminist issues (their words, not mine), but I think that what happened was very much in character with the personalities of the girls (particularly Hannah).

Huffington Post take on episode (thought it was more accurate than TWoP's opinion)

Hannah hiding...
I don't think I've ever hidden from a friend behind my bed, but definitely have had moments where I wanted nothing more than to hide from the entire world.  Also, as weird as Adam is how could you not melt at when he was the only one that saw just how bad a place Hannah was in and ran (shirtless no less) all the way to her apartment.

"You're here."
"Well, I was always here."
"You know when you're young and you drop a glass and your dad says, like, 'Get out of the way' so you can be safe while he cleans it up?"

"Well, now nobody really cares if I clean it up myself. Nobody really cares if I get cut with glass. If I break something, no one says 'Let me take care of that.'"

One Newton Done

So nice to work on a quick project after the six month struggle that was my previous sweater project!

Newton is one of the Cookie A. sock club patterns, and I'm using the yarn that came with it (which is a dream to work with, it feels delightful!).  Finished the first sock today.  What do you think?

Shake it off...

Florence + The Machine - Shake It Out

Regrets collect like old friends
Here to relive your darkest moments
I can see no way, I can see no way
And all of the ghouls come out to play

And every demon wants his pound of flesh
But I like to keep some things to myself
I like to keep my issues drawn
It's always darkest before the dawn

And I've been a fool and I've been blind
I can never leave the past behind
I can see no way, I can see no way
I'm always dragging that horse around

Our love is questioned, such a mournful sound
Tonight I'm gonna bury that horse in the ground
So I like to keep my issues drawn
But it's always darkest before the dawn

Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off, oh whoa

And I am done with my graceless heart
So tonight I'm gonna cut it out and then restart
'Cause I like to keep my issues drawn
It's always darkest before the dawn

Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off, oh whoa

And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back
And given half the chance would I take any of it back
It's a fine romance but it's left me so undone
It's always darkest before the dawn

Oh whoa, oh whoa...

And I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't
So here's to drinks in the dark at the end of my road
And I'm ready to suffer and I'm ready to hope
It's a shot in the dark aimed right at my throat
'Cause looking for heaven, found the devil in me
Looking for heaven, found the devil in me
Well what the hell I'm gonna let it happen to me, yeah

Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off, oh whoa

Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off, oh whoa

Book Six

Book 6 of my 50/50 Challenge:
4th of July (Women's Murder Club, #4)4th of July by James Patterson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Nothing special, but just like the first three it was a quick read.  I've been having serious sleep troubles lately.  It helps to read a few chapters of something fairly mindless before trying to turn in.

Better Pictures

My Waiting Cardi is officially completely done.  Blocked, buttons, ends, and all!  Here are a few better pictures than the ones I posted over the weekend.

Back
Front
I am really disappointed that it is soooo long.  It otherwise is cute and fits well.  Not sure what the issue is with the length?

Season of the Witch

50/50 Movie Challenge Number 9

Season of the Witch:

I remember seeing trailers for this movie when it was coming out and thinking that I wanted to see it.  Now I can't really remember why...

Cage got in a few quippy one liners.
"What's that smell?"
"That would be you."

A few other comical moments...
"We're going to need more holy water..."
And Ron Perlman  head butting a demon.

But, otherwise there isn't much to say about this one.  It wasn't the worst movie I've ever sat through, but it wasn't particularly good either.  I wouldn't recommend it unless you've really got nothing else to watch.

Religulous

50/50 Challenge Movie Number 8

Religulous:

If you know me you know I am not religious at all, so this movie appealed to my desire to understand what others see/find in religion.  I don't have a problem with others being religious (as long as they are not trying to shove it down my throat), but it's just something that is not for me.

I was rather surprised to to hear the Dr. Francis Collins, head of the Human Genome Project, was so religious.  And not just the "I have faith" sort of religious.  He seemed to be saying that the bible was an eye-witness account of actual events.  I was a little shocked!

I really wanted to slap the dude who was going on about how no one is gay, people who think they are gay are just insecure.  Are you kidding me?

Loved the point about Jonah and the whale...  Well the bible says it was a big fish... How does the fact that it was a big fish, not a whale make it a more believable story?

"You don't have to pass an IQ test to be in the senate."  That was a disturbing quote...  Maybe you should?  Because it seriously worries me that there are people running our country that truly believe the human race started in a garden with a man, a woman, and a talking snake.

Overall I enjoyed the movie.  Of course it had an agenda, but that was clear from the start.  You definitely have to view it as just one side of the story.  It was still interesting, but even I (who is probably one of the least religious people ever) understand that there is more to the story than was presented.  I liked that Maher interviewed quite a variety of people.  Yet at the same time they all sound rather dumb when trying to explain things that are meant to be figurative as literal events and truths.  I think there are more rational people out there than he made it seem.  There was one Islamic woman that   was doing a good job of explaining that you can't take all the passages of the Koran at face value, but they kind of brushed her off.

I think the main point was that faith with out common sense is dangerous, and humans need to have a bit more doubt, and be more humble and rational.  I agree with that sentiment, even if I didn't fully buy everything Maher was throwing out there.

Best part?  When the stoner's head caught on fire...

Book Five

The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1)The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Fifth book of my 50/50 challenge.  My students are reading this in English this year so I thought I'd check it out.  Didn't love it, but compared to some of the stuff I had to read in 7th grade I'm sure I would have preferred this.  We watched the movie before holiday break, it was ok as well.  Not nearly as good as Harry Potter or Hunger Games.

The Waiting is Over

I finally finished my Waiting Cardi!  Everything is done except for sewing on the buttons.  The button band and icord bind off are complete.  The armpits are stitched together.  The ends are woven in.  Now I just have to wait for it to finish drying so I can sew on the buttons and take some better pictures.  I think I'm going to like it.  It seems to fit ok.  The sleeves are a little snug, but I'm hoping the blocking took care of that. It's also a little long, but I don't think it's going to be quite as bad as I thought.  Thankfully it doesn't seem to have the fit issues at the top that B's did.  Here's a quick picture, but it isn't great.  I'll post some more once it's done blocking.

I've been itching to cast on another project for a while now.  This one just took so long, and had so many issues, that I was pretty fed up with it.  I was afraid that if I put it down and started something else I would never pick it up again though, so I resisted the urge to cast on something else.  I have several other sweater projects in mind (and even the yarn to go with them), but I think I'm going to do my Cookie A. Sock Club pattern first.  I cast on last night for the Newton pattern with the lovely green Indigodragonfly yarn that came in the first yarn shipment.  Finished the first cuff last night!

New Low

So very obsessed with this song at the moment...

NEW LOW

I have no space
No room to move around
And this box is getting smaller
I'm trying to get out

How did I get so far
From where I was
When did I decide
To lose my way
Who have I become

I've got a new low
All 52 cards in a row
I see now that I won't let go
No I won't let go

Well who am I?
A cold shoulder left to cry
You feel bad, well so do I
Yeah so do I

I've been right; I've been left
I've been wrong; I've been left behind
I've been up, but mostly down

I've been right; I've been left
I've been wrong; I've been left behind
I've been up, but mostly down

I can not help feeling like
I have so much at steak
So I lock myself inside my head
And I just run in place

So many directions
I don't know which way to go
I'm so busy doing nothing
I got nothing to show

I've got a new low
All 52 cards in a row
I see now that I won't let go
No I won't let go

Well who am I?
A cold shoulder used to cry
You feel bad, well so do I
Yeah so do I

I've been right; I've been left
I've been wrong; I've been left behind
I've been up but mostly down

I've been right; I've been left
I've been wrong; I've been left behind
I've been up but mostly down

I make mistakes
Just like everybody else
But instead of letting go of it
I can't forgive myself

Well I did my time
In the window-less box
Like it or not
All I got now is today
Tomorrow ain't here
And yesterday is gone dead on me anyway

I've been right; I've been left
I've been wrong; I've been left behind
I've been up, but mostly down

I've been right; I've been left
I've been wrong; I've been left behind
I've been up, but mostly down

I've been right; I've been left
I've been wrong; I've been left behind
I've been up, but mostly down

I've been right; I've been left
I've been wrong; I've been left behind
I've been up, but mostly down
