Midnight in Paris

Movie 13 of my 50/50 Challenge:
Had a mini movie night last night!

Started with Midnight in Paris.  Not at all what I was expecting...  The two main characters were sort of unlikable and there was a time travel element in there (which is not really my thing).  However, the city was kind of the star of the show. I liked the 20s fashion and people and the views of Paris.  Now I want to go to walk around very badly.

Finished with Empire Records.  Which I can pretty much recite line by line... That was probably pretty annoying to the person watching with me!  Love that movie.  Damn the man, save the empire.

Sheep

It is an absolutely beautiful day out today, so on my way home from Sunday morning knitting I decided to go for a bit of a drive (I also had a cd that I wanted to listen too).  I wouldn't say I was lost exactly, more just sort of wandering through back roads and exploring.  I eventually made my way back home, but stopped to pull over and take a picture of these guys first!

Finished Ernies!

All done, and they fit PERFECTLY!  However, why is it so difficult to take a picture of one's own feet?

I was getting a little nervous that I was going to run out of yarn... And with good reason!  This little piece is all I had left!  Yikes!

New Sharp Pointy Sticks!

I went to a some what local knitting store for the first time on Wednesday.  I didn't buy any yarn, because I have no need of more yarn!  But I did pick up some new dpns.  I am so excited to give them a try.  They are square, really lightweight, and SUPER POINTY.  I love pointy needles.  It is really hard to find ones that are very pointy though, lately they all seem to be so blunt. Can't wait to cast something on with them!

I need to finish up my Ernie socks first though.  I am getting close to being done.  I've already turned the heel and finished the gusset decreases.  I just need to knit about two more inches of the foot before I start the toes (I'm making them at the same time/magic loop).  I am REALLY worried that I am going to run out of yarn though.  It doesn't seem like there is quite enough to finish.  The toes might have to be a different color.  It's not the end of the world, but not ideal either.

Check out the tips on the new needles!

An Unexpected Journey

Movie 12 of my 50/50 Challenge

I needed a break from all the news coverage today, so I decided to venture into Middle Earth.

I really meant to go see this when it was in the theaters, but never got around to it.  It as no surprise that I enjoyed it... I liked the Lord of the Rings movies, I liked the book, of course I liked the movie!

Visually it was stunning.  Made me sad I didn't get around to seeing it on the big screen.  Oh well, there will be two more to catch in the theater.

Now I kind of want to pack up my stuff and move to Middle Earth!

Ready Player One

Ready Player OneReady Player One by Ernest Cline
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

PURE NERD HEAVEN. I can't believe I waited so long to read this book.  I had heard good things, but just hadn't picked it up.  Finally got the audiobook from the library.  Definitely making my favorites list for the year.  Ok, so the plot might be a little thin but the references alone are a geek's dream.  Television, movies, books, board games, video games, 80s, music, pop culture...  How can I not love a book the references Heathers in the first few pages?  It's set in the year 2044, but still amazing nostalgic.  If you're a little nerdy like me, I think you'll love this book.

Oh and the narrator for the audiobook?
Wil Wheaton.

Boston

I have no words for what happened today.  I cannot wrap my head around what would sort of person, or people, would do something like this.  So many innocent people injured, some who have already lost their lives.  All we can do is keep those affected in our thoughts and help in anyway we can.

Boston is a unique place, it is the heart of the nation.  We were celebrating Patriots' Day today.  A holiday that commemorates the Battles of Lexington and Concord and the ride of Paul Revere.  Bostonians have always been a smart and scrappy bunch, nothing and no one keeps us down.

Movie 12 of my 50/50 Challenge

Butter

First, can we just take a look at the cast of this movie?  Jennifer Garner, Ty Burrell, Kristen Schaal, Phyllis Smith, Rob Corddry, Hugh Jackman Alicia Silverstone, Olivia Wilde...

The actual plot is about an orphan girl who discovers she has a talent for butter craving.  Who comes up with stuff like this?

Weird, weird movie.  But, I loved it!  That makes two strange, quirky movies in a row that I enjoyed.

Movie 11

Movie Eleven of my 50/50 Challenge:

Jeff, Who Lives At Home

This was a strange little movie.

I was thinking it was a comedy, and in some ways I guess it is.  Yet it's definitely not your typical comedy.

There's more to it than that... It feels a little bit unfinished, or at least under developed, as it is a little on the short side.  I don't really know how to describe it...  such an odd flick!  I can't really explain what I liked about it, but I definitely liked it.

Chocolat(e) Cookies

I baked.  If you know me, you know this is a big deal.  I don't bake.  I don't cook.  Overall I am not very domestic.  This was one of the April Sock Club recipes.  I wanted to try the lavender shortbread too, but I couldn't find the dried flowers.  I'm going to keep looking though.  I have the rest of the ingredients so will be all set as soon as I locate the flowers!

I had some trouble finding the molasses for the chocolate cookies as well... but that was only because the store was hiding it from me! It was behind this nonsense:

The cookies came out excellent.  My parents stopped by for coffee and they liked them too.  I thought the texture was great.  I don't love white chocolate though.  I'm thinking next time I might try milk chocolate chips instead of the white chocolate.  What do you think?

Movie 10

Movie #10 of my 50/50 Challenge:
Wreck-It Ralph

I loved this movie.  So cute and so many fun references!

Not sure why I waited so long to get around to watching it, but I'm glad I finally did.

April Club Yarn and Patterns Arrived Today!

Woohoo! So excited!  I should probably finish the Ernies that I cast on Saturday before I dive into the new patterns, but here are the details:

Recipes:
Lavender Shortbread - Rich, buttery, tender, and sweetly perfumed with lavender
Chocolat(e) Cookies - Made with nearly a pound of chocolate and cocoa, the ultimate decadent indulgence

Yarn:
Dream in Color, Everlasting in Violet Hour

Patterns:
Tulip

Pirouette Socks

Once again, I like both patterns.  I think I will start with the Tulips because I feel like they go with the yarn.  I like the Pirouettes as well, so I will get around to them eventually but with other yarn.  I have plenty of sock yarn that is for sure.  I'm going to try to knit all the club patterns.  Need to finish my Ernies before casting on something new though.

Cast on Ernie

Decided I might as well make some more socks while I wait for the arrival of the next club yarn, so I cast on Ernie from the first installment of the club.  I used the club yarn on the first pattern (Newton) already, so I am using some lovely teal Wabi Sabi Tallulah Sock in the colorway "Not Your Ordinary Bird" (which was a graduation gift from a knitter friend).

Finished Newtons

It took about a month (mainly because I lost my motivation on the second sock), but I finally finished the first of my Cookie A. Sock Club pattern.  My gauge was a little off on the second one, so it's a bit bigger than the first.  I'm not sure why.  Maybe I mixed up my dpns?

I just got the tracking information for the next yarn shipment.  I am excited to see what arrives!  This first yarn (Indigodragonfly MCN Sock) was an absolute dreaming to work with.  The touch of cashmere made it soft as butter.  I'm sure the next one will be just as nice.

Movie 9/Book 8

More updates to my 50/50 challenge!

Book 8:
The 5th Horseman (Women's Murder Club, #5)The 5th Horseman by James Patterson
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Hmm... Like the rest of this series, it's a quick easy read.  There are a few good plot twists, but they are somewhat predictable.  Still, when you need something mindless to read a few chapters of before bed this series is perfect.

Movie 9:

The Lorax

I always loved the book and original movie.  I was prepared to be disappointed in the remake... but it wasn't bad.  Cute and a good continuation of the story.  Still won't replace the original in my heart...

More Puffs!

I've been on a puff kick the past week or two.  Just in the mood for mindless knitting I guess.  Here's 14 more.  That should bring my total up to around 85 I think.  Progress... but still such a long way to go.

Book Six

Book Six of my 50/50 challenge:

The Dog StarsThe Dog Stars by Peter Heller
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I really didn't know much about this book when I checked it out from the library website, but had heard it was quite popular.  It is set in a post-apocalyptic world where most of the population has succumbed to a new strand of the flu.  It follows the life of a pilot, and his co-pilot dog, as well as their somewhat sociopathic friend/fellow survivor.  It was a compelling enough story that, even though it will not become one of my favorite, held my interest.  Definitely worth reading.

Veronica Mars Movie

Watch.  It's funny.

Not sure why I haven't written about this sooner, as I'm super excited about it!

It looks like there is a real chance we will finally see a Veronica Mars movie.  The cast is in, Rob Thomas is in, and they already raised the funds on Kickstarter.  Hopefully that means filming will be happening this summer.  Fingers crossed.

Need a Laugh?

Tonight was not my night... Not at all.  At least these made me laugh today.

They treats us like an extra and that feels so rough...

Warning! Season 1/Book One spoilers.

Ahh true love...

(can't take credit for that... it's someone else's YouTube comment, but it's brilliant).

Oh Kevin...

Listening to SModcast Episode 29: Harry Scotter and the Order of the Penis
(which is Kevin Smith & Scott Mosier's Podcast)

Oh Kevin, how can you not like the movie Clue?  Such a classic...  Not only did he dislike it, he REALLY hated it!

A Few More Puffs

I haven't made any hexipuffs in quite some time.  Mostly because I was working on my sweater and then some Christmas knitting and then the sweater again.  Here are a few more finished ones.

I think that brings my total up to 71.  I should count them at some point though, as I'm not positive if that number is accurate or not.  There a good project to keep in my bag for on the go knitting, I just have to remember to throw them in my purse (although it is kind of annoying to have to carry around polyfill).

I also cast on and knit the cuff of my second Newton.  Need to finish before the next yarn shipment goes out!
