Socks for My Dad

I am trying really hard to get these done for Christmas, but I'm not sure I'm going to finish them in time.

I was also hoping to make a scarf for my mother (to match the hat I made her) and possibly a hat for my brother... Should have started my Christmas knitting sooner!

One Down

One Christmas gift down! Got lots of knitting done yesterday while watching some Tru Blood with Rachel.

Today I started watching Lost from the beginning (I didn't watch it while it was actually on) and was able to finish a Meret for my mom (I am making one for myself as well, but it is in time out while I work on Xmas gifts).

Holiday Knitting

My KnitPicks order arrived today, so I can finally get started on my holiday knitting. My goals are pretty ambitious, but it's not like I'll be doing anything other than watching tv and knitting up until Christmas day anyway.

I would really like to make a matching hat and scarf set for my mom and a pair of socks for my dad. I think that both of these are probably realistic if I knit like crazy the next several days.

Here's what I got from KnitPicks:

Gloss DK in Fairy Tail and Stroll in Basalt Heather

I had also wanted to make my grandmother a pair of socks, but I am not optimistic that I will have enough time for that.

Let the knitting begin!

It has sleeves!

For those of you who don't know, I had surgery on Thursday and will be confined to my apartment for 2 weeks and out of work for 4 to 6.

I am sore and uncomfortable, but otherwise doing really well all things considered.

The silver-lining is that I already managed to get the DVR down to 29% (which is really impressive for me!) and I am getting lots of knitting done as well.

I've been putting off working on these sleeves for a while. Mainly because they are 92 stitches each and plain old boring stockinette stitch. But they are now DONE and attached to the body. I call the progress!

Meret 2.0

Last December I made the Meret, aka mystery beret, for a secret Santa swap. I really liked how it came out (after going back and adding an extra repeat for more "slouchiness"). I got some yarn from Rachel at open studios this past weekend, so this is what it is going to be! Here's to hoping there is enough left for some matching fingerless mitts!

Side note: did you know that in Egyptian mythology Meret (also spelled Mert) was a goddess who was strongly associated with rejoicing, such as singing and dancing? Thank you Wikipedia for that random bit of info!

Finished something!

I had a lovely last weekend of freedom before I will confined to the couch for a fee weeks.

Hung out with the guy Friday night, hung out with Rachel Saturday afternoon at open studios, hung out with some friends Saturday night, and then went to open studios again today with Kristen.

Even with all that hanging out I managed to finish a pair of socks! Sadly I ran out of yarn... And since it's some that I had hand dyed there is no more. I finished off the toes with some green I had of the same yarn though and I am satisfied with the result.

Here they are:

Social Network

I went to see Social Network on Friday.  I really enjoyed it.  It was a really interesting story and it was kind of cool to think about to when the whole napster/facebook revolution was taking place.  I remember very clearly the awesomeness that was napster, and I most certainly miss the days of spending hours upon hours downloading mp3s of all kinds.  It was well written and well filmed, and I highly recommend it.

Tried Week 4

Just finished #c25k week 4 run 1 with #getrunning – 31½ minutes of exercise and 16 minutes of running. Next run: Tuesday 12th.

I got through the two 3 minute runs ok, and even finished the first 5 minute one (through I had to slow my pace way down), but I couldn't do the second 5 minute one... Only got about 2 minutes into before I had to walk.

Still, this is progress!

Week 3 Run 3ish

Still struggling with those three minute runs. I am going to have to repeat this week before moving on!

Week 3 Run 2ish...

Just finished #c25k week 3 run 2 with #getrunning – 25 minutes of exercise and 9 minutes of running. Next run: Wednesday 15th.

"Finished" might be a little too strong a word... I definitely cheated and held on to the rails on the treadmill for the last minute of both 3 minute runs... I should not run at night, way too tired. I slacked off an hit snooze a couple of times this morning and didn't get out of bed until 5:30, so there wasn't time to run... I think I will have to repeat this one.

A good weekend for knitting!

I made some excellent progress on my honeybee cardigan this weekend!  The ribbing is done and I finished 8 repeats of the pattern.  It currently measures almost 8 inches.  The color falls somewhere in between the two pictures.  It's not quite as peachy as it looks in the first, but not as pale as the second (I really need to get some batteries for my camera so I don't have to always use my phone!).

I went to visit Rachel at Open Studios on Saturday and then we had a mini TruBlood marathon on Sunday.  I picked up some back to school yarn while I was at the studios.  It is Dream in Color's Starry in the Prairie Grass colorway.  It is darker than it looks in the pictures and awesomely sparkly!  Plus, the silver in it will protect my toes from little yippee vampire dogs (like the ones in Blade Trinity)!

3rd run down...

Just finished #c25k week 1 run 3 with #getrunning – 28½ minutes of exercise and 8 minutes of running. Next run: Sunday 5th.

Technically this should be the end of week one, but I think I am going to repeat each week twice before moving on. My hope is that if I take it slow I won't give up!

Starting Over (again)

Just finished #c25k week 1 run 1 with #getrunning – 28½ minutes of exercise and 8 minutes of running. Next run: Tuesday 31st.

I am trying to start Couch 2 5K program again (for is probably at least the 3rd or 4th time). I think this time around I will go nice and slow. Maybe even do each week 2 or 3 times before moving on. Last time it just got too hard too fast and I made up all kinds of excuses why I couldn't do it and then I just gave up.

Hopefully I can get myself into a good routine and stick with it this time!

New Projects!

After about 4 or 5 months of work I finally finished my Camber Cardigan!  In my defense it was on size 3 needles with lace weight yarn...  I had a little trouble with the i-cord bind off (the button band was too tight and when I pulled it out I caused some unraveling issues but I seemed to be able to hide the disaster area pretty well!), but over all I really liked the end result.  I am a huge fan of fine gauge sweaters, so I am jumping right into another project.  This time it is on size 4 needles with fingering weight yarn, therefore it should move along a bit faster!  So far I have the ribbing and one repeat of the pattern done.

I also really like have a small, mindless project on the needles that I can toss in my bag and work on whenever I have a spare moment and am sitting down (waiting rooms, movie theaters, etc).  So here is the start to some plain k3, p3 ribbed socks.   A perfect on the go project!

Finished!

And with 3 days to spare! I needed to finish this gift by Saturday and I am done with both the hat and the sweater already. I may make the matching booties, but I am undecided. I really want to finish my skew socks tomorrow so then I can start one of the sweaters I bought yarn for when I went to Webs on Monday. Plus, I have almost no green yarn left. I was getting pretty nervous I was going to run out completely on the hat but it made it.

I think it is adorable, but my god there were a lot of ends to weave in!

I've got a fever and the only prescription is more... CRAFTING!

Lately I am finding my job to be a bit infuriating. The drama, the politics, the disrespect... I as much as I like what I do I feel like I am being crushed by all of the other stuff this year. I am trying to remember that there are good years and bad years and that this is surely just one of the bad years. Yet more and more I am worrying about a growing trend of rudeness and disrepect and a lack of personal responsibility in my students, and it makes me very uneasy about the future.

Recently a knitting buddy told me she needs to do more of what makes her happy since her job is making her miserable. I think I need to do the same. I still knit a lot, but I need to get myself into more of a crafty creativity mode. I have a closet full of yarn, beads, fabric, ribbon, glue, thread, wire, etc and it is time to dig it all out and jump back in.

So... I have rescued my sewing machine from the closet and I bought a book of bag patterns that are pattern free and very simple to customize (Sew What: Bags by Lexie Barnes). While I was at JoAnn Fabric last week, picking out some buttons for the baby sweater I am knitting, I also picked up some fabric that was on sale. Now I just have to figure out what it wants to be, and practice sewing a straight line because I have EXTREMELY limited sewing skills! I figure I can learn by trial and error, hopefully...

What do I want to be? A knitting tote? A needle case? A matching tote and needle case!

This week is more difficult!

Just finished my 2nd run of week 3 with #getrunning – 25 minutes of exercise and 9 minutes of running. Next run: Thursday 15th.

This one was difficult, I might have to do this run a few extra times before moving on to week 4.
